St.
Patrick’s Day 2008 brought noted lepidopterist and writer Robert M. Pyle Ph.D.
to Arnold’s Butterfly Haven. Bob not only spent the morning in the garden, he
also met many of the critters at Arnold’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. The
smile on his face shows how pleased he was to visit us!
Arnold’s was one stop along the way of Bob’s year-long journey throughout North
America in a quest to find, experience and identify as many of the approximately
800 species of butterflies in the United States and Canada as possible. While in
our butterfly garden, he identified four butterfly species to add to his list!
The results of Bob’s project will be published by Houghton Mifflin Company in a
book entitled Swallowtail Seasons: The First Butterfly Big Year. Bob has
authored a dozen books, including the Audubon Society Field Guide to North
American Butterflies, and received several book awards.
